Don’t rush summer away…
August can bring a strange sense of urgency. Summer isn't over yet, but our calendars are already pointing toward what's next. Back-to-school routines, busier schedules, earlier mornings, and fall commitments can make it tempting to mentally move on before the season has actually ended.
But you don't have to rush ahead. You can let yourself be where you are.
Savoring summer doesn't require a vacation or an elaborate bucket list. Often, it's about paying attention to the small experiences that are easy to overlook when we are focused on what's coming next.
Try choosing a few simple ways to stay present during these final weeks:
Spend time outside. Have your morning coffee on the porch, take an evening walk, or watch the sunset.
Enjoy something seasonal. Pick up fresh local produce, have a picnic, or make a favorite summer meal.
Get near the water. Swim, visit a lake, sit by a stream, or simply listen to the sound of water.
Put your phone down. Give yourself a few minutes each day to experience something without documenting it.
Make time for people you love. Plan something simple -- a backyard dinner, game night, walk, or spontaneous get-together.
Leave some space in your calendar. You don't need to fill every remaining summer weekend. Unstructured time can be restorative, too.
There's often pressure to make the most of summer -- to travel, accomplish, experience, and check things off a list. But you don't need to maximize the season for it to matter.
Maybe this summer wasn't what you expected. Maybe you didn't do everything you planned. And that's okay. There are still moments left to enjoy.
So, before you start preparing for the next season, take a breath and ask yourself what you want to savor before summer ends. And then, make a little room for it.
