How to feel more confident this summer.

For many people, summer arrives with an unspoken list of expectations: Lose the weight. Get in shape. Be more disciplined. Look different than you do right now. For many people, summer becomes less about enjoying life and more about preparing their body to be seen.

But what if your body didn't need to be fixed before you participate in your life? What if you didn't have to earn summer?

It's easy to fall into the trap of postponing joy. Maybe you've caught yourself thinking, "I'll wear that when I lose weight," or, "I'll go to the pool when I feel more confident," or, "I'll take photos when I look better."

The problem is that while we are waiting for our bodies to change, life keep moving. The family vacations, the beach trips, the cookouts, the evenings spent outside with people we love -- these moments don't wait for us to feel ready. And they deserve to be experienced now, not after reaching a certain number on a scale or fitting into a particular size.

Body positivity isn't about loving every part of your body every moment of every day. For many people, that's not realistic. Instead, body positivity can start with treating your body with a little more respect and a little less criticism.

One way to begin is by paying attention to how you speak to yourself. If you notice harsh self-talk, ask yourself whether you would speak that way to a friend, child, or loved one. Often, we hold ourselves to standards we would never place on anyone else.

It can also help to shift your focus from appearance to function. Rather than focusing on what your body looks like, consider what it allows you to do. Your body carries you through walks with friends, hugs your loved ones, helps you experience nature, dances at weddings, gardens, travels, and participates in the moments that matter most.

Another helpful practice is to challenge the urge to avoid experiences because of body image concerns. Wear the shorts. Take the photo. Go swimming. Attend the event. Confidence often grows through participation, not through waiting.

And if social media leaves you feeling inadequate, consider curating your feeds more intentionally. The messages we consume every day shape how we see ourselves. Following people and organizations that promote realistic, diverse, and healthy representations of bodies can make a meaningful difference over time.

Taking care of your health and accepting your body are not opposites. You can choose nourishing foods because they help you feel energized. You can move your body because it supports your strength, mobility, and mental health. You can prioritize sleep because it helps you function at your best. Those choices can come from care rather than criticism. 

The goal is not to punish your body into becoming something else. The goal is to support the body you have today.
