Let’s talk about suicide prevention.
September is National Suicide Prevention and Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness, reduce stigma, remember those we have lost, support those who are struggling, and remind our communities that help is available.
Suicide is a serious public health concern, but suicide prevention is possible. There is no single cause or experience that determines whether someone will have suicidal thoughts. Mental health conditions, substance use, chronic pain, stressful life experiences, relationship difficulties, loss, isolation, and many other factors can contribute to suicide risk.
Sometimes, the most important thing we can do is notice. Warning signs can include talking about wanting to die, feeling hopeless or like a burden, withdrawing from friends and family, experiencing significant changes in mood or behavior, taking dangerous risks, or making a plan for suicide. These signs are particularly important to pay attention to when they are new or increasing.
And if you are worried about someone, you don't need to have the perfect words. You can simply ask, "Are you thinking about suicide?"
Research summarized by the National Institute of Mental Health indicates that asking someone directly about suicide does not increase suicidal thoughts or behavior. Listening without judgment, helping someone connect with support, and following up can all be meaningful steps.
At Evolve Wellness, we believe supporting mental health means creating space for honest conversations, reducing stigma, and making care and connection part of everyday life, not just something we talk about during awareness months.
That's also why we carry a few products that allow you to support suicide prevention and mental health organizations through your everyday purchases.
Socks That Support Mental Health -- Our mental-health-themed socks from Conscious Step are a small way to wear your support, and 5% of proceeds from each pair goes to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI).
One More Day -- Our Healing Is Not Linear T-Shirt and Lucky to See Another Sunrise Long Sleeve were created in support of mental health awareness and suicide prevention. 25% of proceeds from each shirt goes to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP).
Wearing them can be a simple reminder to yourself and others that mental health deserves to be talked about, supported, and cared for.
If you or someone you know is experiencing suicidal thoughts, emotional distress, or simply feels like things have become too much, you don't have to navigate it alone.
Call or text 988 to connect with the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. Support is available 24/7, free and confidential, throughout the United States.
And if someone you care about has been struggling, reach out. Ask how they are really doing. Listen. Stay connected. Sometimes a conversation can be the beginning of someone getting the support they need.
This September, let's move beyond awareness and toward action -- by checking in, speaking openly, reducing stigma, and reminding one another that help is available.
You matter. Your story matters. And you don't have to go through hard things alone.
