The power of a check-in text.
Sometimes someone we love comes to mind, and we think, "I should check in on them." Then life gets busy, we don't know what to say, or we convince ourselves that they will reach out if they need us.
So, here's your reminder: send the text.
It doesn't have to be profound. It doesn't have to fix anything. It can simply let someone know they are on your mind.
And if you don't know what to say, try one of these:
"Hey, you've been on my mind. How are you really doing?"
"No need to respond right away. Just wanted you to know I'm thinking about you."
"How can I support you right now?"
"Want some company? I can come hang out."
"I know things have been a lot lately. I'm here if you want to talk, or if you just want a distraction."
"Just checking in again. How are things going?"
And don't underestimate the follow-up. Check in again tomorrow, next week, after the appointment, after the difficult conversation. Consistent connection reminds people that they matter and that they don't have to navigate hard things alone.
That connection can be part of suicide prevention, but it doesn't have to be a crisis to matter. Checking in is simply one way we care for the people we love.
So, we invite you think of someone you love right now, and send the text.
P.S. We are supporting suicide prevention and mental health awareness this month and every month. Our mental health and suicide prevention apparel gives you another way to show your support, with proceeds from select items benefiting NAMI and AFSP.
