Your autumn herb spotlight: Meet astragalus.

As the leaves change and cooler weather settles in, many of us start thinking about our seasonal wellness routines. This month, we are exploring astragalus, a root with a long history in traditional Chinese medicine and a popular topic in herbal wellness.

But what does the research actually tell us? Let's take a closer look!

Astragalus (Astragalus membranaceus) is a plant whose root has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries, often in combination with other herbs. Traditionally, it's been used to support immune function, vitality, and resilience.

Astragalus root has a mild, earthy, slightly sweet flavor. Traditionally, the root is used in teas, soups, and decoctions, as well as in concentrated preparations like extracts and tinctures.

Herbs aren't one-size-fits-all, and astragalus deserves a little extra consideration when it comes to safety. People with autoimmune conditions should avoid astragalus because it may worsen symptoms. It may also interact with immunosuppressant medications and potentially affect blood sugar or blood pressure. It's safety during pregnancy and breastfeeding isn't well established, so it should be avoided during these times. As with any herbal product, check with your healthcare provider before use, especially if you take medications or manage a chronic health condition.
