Here’s how to support your body through the summer heat.

While summer can feel energizing, it also places extra demands on the body. Heat, humidity, disrupted routines, and busy schedules can all affect sleep, digestion, energy, and recovery.

If you have been feeling more tired or "off" lately, your body may simply be working harder to adapt. Fortunately, a few simple habits can help you feel your best.

Prioritize Hydration

Hydration is about more than drinking water. When we sweat, we lose both fluids and electrolytes like sodium, potassium, and magnesium, which are essential for muscle function, energy production, and nervous system regulation.

In addition to drinking water throughout the day, include water-rich foods like watermelon, cucumbers, berries, tomatoes, and citrus fruits. If you are spending extended time outdoors or exercising in the heat, electrolyte-rich beverages or mineral-rich foods can also help replace what your body loses.

Support Your Digestion

Travel, irregular meal times, dehydration, and rich summer foods can all contribute to bloating, constipation, or stomach discomfort.

Eating regular meals, staying hydrated, including fiber-rich fruits and vegetables, and slowing down while eating can all help your digestive system function more comfortably. If you are traveling, packing nourishing snacks can also make it easier to stay consistent.

Be Mindful of Inflammation

Hot weather, increased physical activity, poor sleep, and ongoing stress can all contribute to inflammation in the body.  One way to support recovery is by choosing foods that naturally provide anti-inflammatory nutrients, such as colorful fruits and vegetables and omega-3-rich foods.

Protect Your Sleep

Longer daylight hours, warmer evenings, and busy summer schedules can make quality sleep harder to come by. To support better rest, try maintaining a consistent bedtime when possible, limiting bright screens before bed, and keeping your bedroom cool, dark, and comfortable. Even small improvements in sleep can positively impact mood, immune function, energy, and stress resilience.

Balance Activity With Recovery

Summer often encourages us to do more, and that's not necessarily a bad thing. But our bodies also need time to recover. Build quiet moments into your week. Stretch after long days. Take walks that aren't about exercise. Spend time in nature. Allow yourself to have days that are restorative instead of packed from morning to night.
